Ordanance Survey Landragner Map
The Landranger map series covers Great Britain with 204 maps. 1 to 50,000 (that's about 1 1/4" to the mile) Each map provides a lot of information to get to know your local area. This is the map for driving but many use it for walking as each map covers a large area and has enough detail with regard to footpaths etc.
The level of detail includes places of interest, tourist information, picnic areas and camping sites, plus Rights of Way information for England and Wales.

Outdoor leisure map , Ordanance Survey 1:25000
The Outdoor Leisure Series of Walking Maps originally covered the main national park walking areas of England, Scotland and Wales. They have now been incorporated into the Explorer Series of Walking Maps but they have an orange cover with a yellow flash to differentiate them from none national park areas.
Ar 1:25000 scale (that's about 2.1/4" to the mile) they have a lot of detail like dry stone walls. This is the perfect walking map.
